Description
During the highly charged socio--political academic atmosphere of the late sixties and early seventies, there also was a little bit of a tiff amongst a few sociologists seeking to guard the integrity of their science. The reasons for the uproar apparently were comments by activist speakers and an occasional scholar that the sociology of African Americans would best be analyzed by African American sociologists. Although the controversy seemingly was confined to the field of sociology, the point being made apparently touched some scholarly nerves and was the subject of Insiders and Outsiders: A Chapter in the Sociology of Knowledge by no less than Robert Merton (1972, 9-47). If the question was, "Does it take one to know one?"; as far as Merton was concerned, the answer was no. Furthermore, any claim that members of different groups have authority regarding knowledge of their group is a dangerous proposition. This is, it appears, an issue of epistemology, one that seems to question the capacity of outsiders to produce understanding. Of course, it is possible that the defenders of mainstream sociology overreacted to the claim. The claim was not that the work of mainstream sociologists was invalid, but instead that work by African American sociologists possibly could be more insightful.
